Once in a while, you come across something on the internet that both repels and attracts at the same time. The combination of Nutella and Brie in a toastie sandwich did it for me.
You often see assorted nuts on a cheese platter, so the combination itself is not very foreign, but pitting it against the sweetness of Nutella and in a toastie sandwich??!?
Obviously, curiosity won, and I tried it on a Sunday morning, leaving the rest of the family in shock, citing a proper waste of both the Nutella and the brie. Although I couldn’t find anyone else willing to have a taste, I must admit that it was a surprisingly good – yet incredibly filling – toastie sandwich.
Nothing spectacular from a recipe point of view:
- Butter one side of a slice of rustic bread and place it butter-side down in a hot pan and cover entirely with slices of brie.
- Generously spread the Nutella on the other slice of bread and put it – Nutella side down – on the other slice of bread in the pan.
- When the bottom slice is golden brown, add a knob of butter to the pan and flip your toastie sandwich and fry until the other slice of bread is golden brown and the Brie starting to ooze out.
The funkiness from the Brie (I used a very mature Brie de Meaux) countered the sweetness of the Nutella better than expected. It was not spectacular enough that it would become a regular for me, but a nice experiment to see it is something for you.
