We just spent our spring vacation on one of the Canary Islands: Lanzarote.
We have visited Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura before, and the rough nature, historic towns, and diversity of the archipelago of volcanic islands is very appealing. Also not unimportant – located about 150km / 100 miles off the north coast of Africa – they have a very agreeable climate all year round.
Lanzarote is the northern- and easternmost of the Canary Islands and can be explored easily by car as it is just about 60 km / 35 miles long and 25 km / 15 miles wide. You will come across mountains in the north and south, even some desert in the middle, extensive lava fields, wineries, salt farms, and of course (some) sandy beaches. Wave- and kitesurfing opportunities are abundant due to the ever-present winds, and cycling definitely is a big thing. Lanzarote even has special secondary roads – right along the most scenic parts of the islands – where motorists are only allowed to drive at low speeds.
We explored the island from a centrally located villa in Nazaret, about 8km / 5 miles from the capital Arrecife. We booked “Vista del Mar” via Airbnb, and the panoramic views definitely justified its name. The temperatures late April/early May were lovely: around 22-23℃ / low 70s℉. Nevertheless, we were glad that our villa had a heated swimming pool as it was way too early in the season to have the pool water at agreeable temperatures on its own. 😎
